This is where the practice of gratitude feels especially important. Gratitude for the challenges you’ve overcome, gratitude for the role that you have played, and gratitude for those that have been there by your side.
Social housing is, at its heart, about people; providing safety and belonging. And behind the day to day work, stand countless women whose strength, compassion and collaboration hold everything together. I’m sure you know the ones; they are the colleagues who check in on you after a difficult day, the mentors who share essential advice, and the peers who quietly inspire you daily.
Many of you work in environments where the pace is relentless, the need overwhelming and resources stretched thin. Yet even in those most challenging moments, it is often another woman’s encouragement or shared understanding that helps you keep going. WISH is extremely proud to play a small part in bringing you together, hearing your experiences, seeing new connections being made and long standing relationships continue to be nurtured. We are grateful for the support you give and the contribution you make.
A global study by the World Economic Forum found that women’s networks give access to career development opportunities, boost self-confidence and help women progress to more senior roles. They also saw one benefit was the availability of psychological and emotional support, which some members said boosted their self-confidence - particularly when combined with the career advice that network members often share.
And we know that is valued in our network too. Perhaps it’s your senior leader who uses her voice to amplify others. Perhaps it’s the housing officer who listens without judgment, bringing empathy and calm to a difficult tenant conversation. Or perhaps it’s the colleague who cracks a joke bringing humour to the office on a stressful afternoon.
Gratitude for these small acts reminds us that we are not alone in the work that we do. Yet how often do you express it out loud? When we acknowledge the contributions of those around us, we strengthen the sense of belonging and confidence that allows everyone to thrive. A culture of gratitude fosters inclusion, mutual respect and supports our wellbeing.
So as we close out the year, here’s an invitation to think about the women who have made a difference to you this year. Who helped you find your voice when you doubted yourself? Who showed kindness when you most needed it? Who saw and heard you when you were struggling? Who reminded you that you matter? Can you extend that gratitude and share it with them? Write them a note. Tell them in person. Mention their name in a meeting. Gratitude is so powerful when it’s shared aloud.
And let’s not forget to extend that same gratitude inward. We know we don’t always stop to thank ourselves for what we’ve achieved. How about recognising your own courage, commitment and compassion too? Even write down three things that you are grateful for about yourself. As women in this sector, you are part of a community who lift each other up.
So here’s to the women beside you: the colleagues, mentors, and friends who make this work not only possible but meaningful. Thank you for everything you do, and for who you are.
