Every day we give our time and energy to our teams, our services and the communities we serve. Many of us entered this sector because we wanted to make a difference, and that instinct to give runs deeply through the work we do every day.
But one of the lessons many female leaders eventually learn, usually the hard way, is that giving endlessly, without investing in ourselves, is not sustainable.
While we often focus on what we give to others, some of the most important gains in leadership come when we invest in ourselves first.
For many women, this does not come naturally. We are often taught early to prioritise the needs of others, to work harder, to keep delivering and to push through pressure. In leadership roles, that instinct can become even stronger. We want to support our teams, advocate for our customers and solve problems for the organisations we care about.
However, sustainable leadership requires something more deliberate - the willingness to invest in ourselves.
For me, that investment has taken different forms over the years. Like many of you, I’ve learned that when the pressure is high it is often the things that nourish me that fall away first. Knowing that those are exactly the things that allow me to lead well.
As someone balancing a demanding role with training outside work (the current goal is an IronMan 70.3) I am constantly reminded that resilience and performance are built through consistent investment, not just effort in the moment.
Investing in ourselves starts with something as fundamental as prioritising our wellbeing. Leadership is demanding, and our physical and mental wellbeing directly shape how we show up for others. When we take the time to look after ourselves, through movement, reflection, learning or knowing when to rest, we bring greater clarity, patience and perspective to the people around us.
It can also mean investing in our development and growth. Leadership is never static. Each challenge asks something different of us, new skills, new thinking and sometimes the courage to step outside our comfort zones. Prioritising our development through learning, mentorship or reflection, is not just about personal advancement, it strengthens the organisations and communities we serve.
Perhaps most importantly, investing in ourselves means investing in our confidence and voice. Women in leadership are still too often navigating environments where we may feel pressure to prove ourselves or to moderate our views. Choosing to back ourselves, to speak with clarity and to trust our judgement is an investment that benefits not only us, but the teams who look to us for direction.
And this is where the real meaning of “Give to Gain” becomes clear.
When we invest in our wellbeing, growth and confidence, we are better able to give the things our teams and organisations need most: thoughtful leadership, resilience in challenging moments and the ability to create environments where others can thrive.
Within networks like WISH, there is something particularly powerful in making this visible. When women support one another’s development, share experiences and encourage sustainable leadership, we create environments where women are not simply sustaining leadership roles, but actively shaping the future of them.
As our sectors continue to face increasing complexity and pressure, the need for resilient, reflective leadership has never been greater.
Because when female leaders invest in themselves, the gain is never just personal. It strengthens teams, organisations and the systems we lead.
