WISH South East: Sowing Authentic Leadership

As women supporting women across the housing sector, WISH has always recognised the value of creating spaces where people feel encouraged to learn, connect and grow.

If there is one certainty in today's world, it is uncertainty.

Across the social housing sector, we are navigating significant change. Economic pressures, evolving regulation, sustainability commitments, technological advances and changing customer expectations mean that very few of us can predict exactly what the next five years will look like. For many leaders, that uncertainty can feel uncomfortable. We naturally want plans, certainty and clear direction.

But perhaps this is where the idea of 'rewilding' offers us something powerful.

Rewilding is often associated with nature – allowing landscapes to regenerate by creating the conditions for growth rather than controlling every outcome. It isn't about neglect; it's about trusting natural systems, encouraging diversity and recognising that not every path needs to be mapped in advance.

We believe authentic leadership works in much the same way.

For years, leadership was often portrayed as having all the answers. The strongest leaders were expected to project confidence, certainty and unwavering direction. Today, however, the leaders who inspire the greatest trust are often those who are comfortable saying, "I don't know yet, but we'll work it out together."

Authentic leadership isn't about perfection. It's about being genuine, self-aware and values-led, particularly when circumstances are uncertain. It means having the courage to be honest about challenges while still giving people hope and confidence in the future.

When we lead authentically, we create environments where others feel safe to do the same. Teams become more willing to share ideas, challenge assumptions and admit when something isn't working. Innovation flourishes because people aren't afraid of getting it wrong. Instead of trying to control every step of the journey, we become curious explorers, learning and adapting together.

This feels particularly relevant within social housing.

Every day we work alongside communities that are themselves experiencing change and uncertainty. We ask residents to trust us, colleagues to embrace new ways of working and organisations to think differently about the future. If we expect others to embrace change, we must be willing to model that ourselves.

One of our favourite leadership questions is simply: 'What if we didn't need to have all the answers today?'

It's a deceptively simple question, but it changes our mindset. Instead of focusing on certainty, we begin fcusing on learning. Instead of seeking control, we build resilience. Instead of fearing the unknown, we become open to possibilities we may never have imagined.

Rewilding also reminds us that growth is rarely linear.

Careers certainly aren't. Most of us can look back and recognise that our greatest learning came from unexpected opportunities, difficult conversations or roles we never planned to take. At the time, those moments may have felt uncomfortable or even overwhelming. Looking back, however, they often become the defining experiences that shaped our confidence, our values and our leadership.

Perhaps organisations grow in much the same way.

As women supporting women across the housing sector, WISH has always recognised the value of creating spaces where people feel encouraged to learn, connect and grow. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer one another isn't a solution; it's the confidence to keep taking the next step, even when the destination isn't fully visible.

The newsletter theme also asks how we can 'plant flowers along the way.'

For us, those flowers are the small, everyday acts of leadership that often go unnoticed. They are the encouraging conversation with a colleague who's doubting themselves. The opportunity offered to someone with potential rather than experience. The decision to listen before speaking. The willingness to celebrate success, share knowledge or simply show kindness during a difficult day.

These moments may seem small, but collectively they create cultures where people flourish.

Perhaps rewilding leadership isn't about abandoning the map altogether. Perhaps it's about carrying our values as the compass instead.

When our decisions are grounded in authenticity, curiosity, courage and compassion, we don't need to know every twist and turn of the journey. We simply need to trust that, together, we can navigate whatever lies ahead.

And if, along the way, we leave the path just a little brighter for someone else, then perhaps that's what authentic leadership is really all about.
