Giving Golf a Go!

Members from WISH London and WISH South East join Clarion for a day of golf.

Members from WISH London and WISH South East join Clarion for a day of golf.

Early in September, WISH joined Clarion for their inaugural golf day at the stunning country club Foxhills in Surrey. With the aim to make the day more inclusive, WISH supported Clarion in identifying several women with handicaps who played in mixed teams for a main 18 hole ‘shot gun’ competition and also gave the chance for nearly 20 WISH members to give golf a go for the first time.

The enthusiastic beginners had a fantastic time getting to grips with how to swing, drive, pitch and putt in the morning. Then enjoyed putting their skills to the test in the afternoon as they tackled the 9 hole course in small groups - with the amazing professionals on hand to give further advice.  Congratulations to beginner Holly Simmons from Clarion who won closest to the pin on the 9 hole course.  Many congratulations also to WISH Member Kat Hurworth from Currie and Brown who won closest to the pin on the main competition.

The day ended with a lovely three course meal and an auction of fantastic prizes which raised nearly £4,500 for the charity Darel Bryan Foundation – set up to help find a cure for brain tumours after Clarion housing officer Darel tragically passed away in 2016 aged 34.

Clarion were delighted with the day and thanked WISH for helping to make the whole event more diverse. The day was brilliant fun and was a great way to network with new people, getting some fresh air and learning a new skill.  What’s not to love? Many of the beginners said they were going to take lessons and think about taking the game more seriously.

Susie Rogers, Partner of Housing and Regeration from Capsticks Solicitors (WISH’s Legal Advisors) tried golf for the first time:

I was delighted to be invited by WISH to participate in the recent Clarion Golf Day.  Having never played before, I was a little nervous about what to expect, but I shouldn’t have worried, the day was incredibly well organised and catered specifically for beginners – we were taught by experts, and then then put into small groups to test out our new skills. Learning a new sport and making new friends in the sector made it a thoroughly enjoyable day.  I’m looking forward to the next one!”
