Women In Social Housing (WISH) South East held their first event of 2025, and what an event it was. The session focused on the crucial topic of skills shortages and how we can work together to tackle this growing issue in the housing and construction sectors. It was a passionate and insightful discussion, with valuable contributions from an incredible panel of speakers: Danielle Buckley, Leah Ottaway, Darryl Stewart, and Carlene Goodearl. The conversation was expertly guided by the fabulous Megan Farmer, who ensured a lively and engaging session.
Several key points stood out during the event. One of the main takeaways was the importance of educating young people about careers in housing and construction from as early as primary school. By making the sector more visible, we can show the variety of roles available and help change perceptions. Another key discussion point was the need to make the sector more attractive, not just through the diversity of roles but by ensuring that apprentices are paid a fair wage. We also discussed encouraging experienced professionals to consider the sector, as their transferable skill sets could make a huge difference.
The list of ideas for tackling the skills shortage goes on, and the event sparked many valuable conversations that will continue to shape how we move forward.
A huge thank you to our generous sponsors: Mulalley, Gemma Peglar, Julian Sanz, and the Mulalley team. Your support was instrumental in making this event possible.
We also want to give a special shout out to Hony Premlal MBA CIHCM MIoL and Women in Social Housing (WISH) and London Build Recruitment for their continued support.
As always, a massive thank you to the WISH South East board members for their hard work and dedication: Mia Davis MCIOB AssocRICS, Rebecca Sandhu, Rebecca Armstrong, Joanne Kelly, Josie Lee, Elizabeth Freeman (previously Slate), Anna Keys FRICS, and Lynsey Coombs.
Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us for this event. Your participation and enthusiasm made it truly special. We look forward to the next opportunity to connect and continue the conversation about tackling the skills shortage in our sector.
